Case Study: SunPower

Advanced Energy Economy // Jan 26, 2012

SunPower has more than 35 megawatts (MW) of solar power installed or under contract at U.S. government facilities. In September 2011, SunPower was awarded a $100 million contract for electricity to be generated by a large-scale photovoltaic power system at Naval Air Weapons Station China Lake. As part of the contracting process, SunPower and the U.S. Navy negotiated the U.S. government’s first 20-year power purchase agreement for renewable energy. Beginning in late 2012, the 13.8 MW power plant will produce about 30 million kWh per year, roughly one-third of the electricity used at the base. In the process, developers expect the project to save the Navy about $13 million in electricity costs over the next 20 years.
