This report highlights how utilities have been playing an increasingly active role in the rapidly expanding cleantech universe, notably in the rollout of smart grid infrastructure, energy efficiency, electric vehicles, energy storage, and renewable generation. The report points out that compared to information technology, cleantech deployment requires much larger capital investments. Given the ability of utilities to raise large amounts of capital and enter into long-term power purchase agreements (provided they receive regulatory approval), utilities are likely to continue to play an increasingly important role in cleantech development and deployment.
