Fort Bliss and Fort Hood: bases as part of the DoD's net zero energy policy
New York Times // Apr 30, 2012Both Fort Bliss and Fort Hood are both integral parts of the Defense Department's stated net zero energy policies. (For more information about these policies, click here.) Fort Bliss, which is slightly larger than the state of Rhode Island, has been installing hundreds of solar panels to reduce net energy and water use. Fort Hood is looking to reduce the amount of landfill waste it produces. The New York Times reports:
Achieving these goals will be tough, officials at both bases said. “It’s really as much about behavior change as it is about technology,” said [Brian] Dosa [Fort Hood's director of public works]. Recycling rates at soldiers’ housing complexes, for example, are low, he said. In addition to recycling, Fort Hood wants to reduce packaging and encourage reuse of materials like household goods.
