With electric vehicles (EVs) becoming more widely available on the market, state governments across the country are taking steps to incorporate more electric vehicles into their state fleets. This analysis demonstrates the potential long-term savings EVs could deliver for Indiana, finding that replacing Indiana’s light duty vehicle fleet with comparable EVs could save roughly $62.4 million over a 15-year span.

Saving Taxpayer Money on Florida’s Vehicle Fleet: Total Cost of Ownership Survey and Savings

State vehicle procurement often relies on a pure up-front cost assessment. Recently, states have started to look at ways to holistically assess up-front cost, fuel, and maintenance when procuring fleet vehicles. A total cost of ownership approach is a straightforward, fiscally responsible way to ensure that state fleets are affordable, modern, and maximize state dollars. A new report from national business association Advanced Energy United found the state of Florida could save almost $280 million by considering the total cost of ownership in vehicle procurement decisions, compared to the current practice of only considering purchase price. The report, a joint effort between Advanced Energy United and the Electrification Coalition with support from Atlas Public Policy, highlights the lower lifetime maintenance costs that ultimately make an electric fleet significantly more affordable for the state.

A team of 13 graduate students in Columbia University’s MPA in Environmental Science and Policy program worked to develop for AEE recommendations to accelerate the adoption of electric school buses in some of the country’s most promising markets. Through a series of policy and financial recommendations, the Columbia team identified pathways to adoption in support of AEE’s ongoing work in three fast-growing Sun Belt states – Arizona, Florida, and Texas. The report discusses the current landscape surrounding energy markets and regulation in these states, analyzes political considerations affecting electric school bus adoption, and provides recommendations for accelerating the transition to emissions-free school transportation fleets.
