AEE Statement on Nomination of New FERC Commissioner

Posted by Adam Winer on Sep 9, 2021

With a full complement of commissioners, FERC needs to remove market barriers to advanced energy, integrate distributed and renewable energy, and support new transmission to tap low-cost resources

WASHINGTON, September 9, 2021 – National business group Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) released the following statement regarding President Biden’s announcement of his intent to nominate Chairman Willie L. Phillips of the Public Service Commission of the District of Columbia to serve on the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC):

“With a nominee announced to fill its open position, FERC moves one step closer to having the full complement of commissioners needed to tackle the critical energy issues facing the U.S. today,” said Jeff Dennis, managing director and general counsel at Advanced Energy Economy. “A commission that appreciates the value of new technologies that improve efficiency and reliability, and that is committed to modernizing wholesale markets and the transmission grid to capture that value, will be essential for the country to meet its energy goals.”

“Advanced energy technologies currently face barriers, like outdated and discriminatory market rules, to competing on a level playing field in wholesale power markets, and strong FERC action is required to change this for the better,” added Dennis. “FERC’s role in improving wholesale market competition, overseeing the integration of distributed energy resources and renewable energy onto the nation’s electricity grid, and supporting the development of new transmission lines needed to access low cost advanced energy supplies, will be critical to building a clean energy economy.”
