Program Director (Indiana AEE)

Indiana Advanced Energy Economy (Indiana AEE) is a business organization that includes local and national advanced energy companies seeking to make Indiana’s energy system more secure, clean, and affordable. Indiana AEE’s mission is to transform public policy to enable rapid growth of advanced energy companies. Indiana AEE promotes the interests of its members through legislative and regulatory policy advocacy, convening groups of CEOs to identify and address cross-industry issues, and by raising awareness among policymakers and the general public about the opportunity offered by all forms of advanced energy for cost savings, electric system reliability and resiliency, and economic growth in the Hoosier state.

Advanced Energy Economy Institute (AEE Institute) educates policymakers about the advanced energy technologies that are available now to help us meet our energy needs. Our mission is to raise awareness of the public benefits and opportunities of advanced energy.

Indiana AEE is a project of Advanced Energy Economy, a 501(c)(6) organization.

Description

Having launched in the fall of 2016, Indiana AEE is currently seeking candidates for a full-time Program Director in a contract position. The Program Director will lead efforts to develop a multi-year strategy and plan in coordination with Advanced Energy Economy’s Vice-President of State Policy, inclusive of key metrics and deliverables. Candidates should be based in Indianapolis, with the ability to travel in and around the state to conduct Indiana AEE business.

Key Skills For Success

A Proven Fundraiser: State associations are only as successful as the funding in their treasury allows them to be. The Program Director will need to be a skilled fundraiser from philanthropy, as well as a closer in corporate development. Recruitment of new business members is the lifeblood of the organization and it is augmented by private philanthropic support. A history of fundraising success is a must.

A Mind for Policy: Market opportunities for the advanced energy industry are driven by policy. The ideal candidate will have a working knowledge of the Indiana legislative and regulatory process. Experience in energy policy is a bonus but not completely necessary.

Be Small “p” Political: Recognizing opportunity and building coalitions to seize that opportunity is a key to success for creating a policy environment that allows advanced energy to thrive. The ideal candidate doesn’t need to have a background in politics but does need to know how it works and be willing to insert the industry into the politics of the policy-making process.

Key Responsibilities

  • Working with the AEE State Policy team and key stakeholders in Indiana, develop and implement a strategy to achieve the outcomes identified in Indiana AEE’s policy platform, which will increase the share of advanced energy technologies in Indiana’s energy portfolio. Develop and execute activities to advance that platform.
  • Relying on personal networks and those of AEE’s Indiana consultants, cultivate relationships with key public officials, including policy makers in the Indiana state legislature, Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission (IURC), Midcontinent ISO (MISO), the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, and the Indiana Office of Energy Development.
  • Host regular stakeholder meetings and events to educate key stakeholders and decision makers on the benefits of advanced energy.
  • Work with AEE Institute staff to develop a series of research publications to help support the Indiana AEE policy platform.
  • Serve as spokesperson for Indiana AEE, speaking at industry conferences and events, as well as various hearings before public agencies.
  • In coordination with the AEE Communications team, lead all communications-oriented activities related to Indiana AEE including earned media, op-eds, editorial board meetings, etc.
  • Coordinate/lead efforts with coalition allies in increasing awareness of the benefits of advanced energy technologies and services.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of proven management experience, preferably in a non-profit setting or the advanced energy industry.
  • Experience in working with business leaders at the board or project level.
  • Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degree in management, public policy, public management, and/or relevant equivalent experience a plus.
  • Skilled leadership in the development and implementation of strategic and project plans with track record of achieving measureable outcomes for programs and projects.
  • Self-starter and entrepreneurial spirit; candidates must be very comfortable shaping priorities and agendas within broadly set parameters.
  • Experience in corporate development, sales and/or fundraising strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience in shaping and advancing a policy agenda including oversight of strategic communications.
  • Working knowledge of energy and/or the advanced energy industry, as well as energy policy at the state level preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal skills required; candidates must be able to successfully develop and maintain productive relationships with members, industry stakeholders, policymakers, funders and other key contacts.
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, required—inclusive of public speaking.
  • Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to handle multiple projects in a fast paced environment.
  • Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Willingness to travel extensively across Indiana, and occasionally to national meetings.

Customer Engagement Manager

Advanced Energy Economy (AEE) is seeking a relationship-building professional to guide and grow our customer engagement program. Responsibilities

The ideal Customer Engagement Manager will become an expert in the value, benefits, and features of all forms of AEE membership and participation. S/he will manage, coordinate, and expand a robust customer engagement strategy for all member/participant types with enthusiasm and creativity including:

  • Ongoing outreach and communication to build and maintain member and participant relationships
  • Event development, planning, and execution, both online and in-person
  • Onboarding all new members including maintenance and development of membership support materials
  • Engagement analysis and support throughout the course of the membership year including active tracking of participation
  • Engagement analysis and support for event participation
  • Support for existing schedule of standing calls and working groups in coordination with policy team
  • Responding to and managing inbound member support questions via software ticketing platform

Required Qualifications

  • Five+ years of member-related experience at a non-profit membership association, with a clear understanding of the role of trade/business associations
  • Experience coordinating small to mid-scale events both online and in-person in geographically dispersed locations
  • Independent and effective time management with excellent organizational skills and ability to meet assigned deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse and primarily remote team and with other employees to meet shared goals
  • Demonstrated ability to write effectively and clearly for various audiences, editing and proofreading skills
  • Strong oral communication skills, customer service, and teaming/cooperative skills for continual interaction with staff and contact with members
  • Demonstrated skills at juggling competing demands and prioritizing assignments
  • Detail oriented
  • Knowledge of, or familiarity with, HTML, Salesforce, and Hubspot preferable
  • Bachelor’s degree or comparable course of study required

Highly Desirable

  • Basic knowledge of the energy and/or government affairs industry
  • Basic awareness of the role of policy in the energy industry
  • Passion for AEE’s mission of driving toward a prosperous world based on secure, clean, affordable energy
