Philadelphia Business Journal (Opinion): Electric vehicles: Plug in, turn on, clean up

Macy Neshati is senior vice president for BYD Heavy Industries (an AEE member), the largest manufacturer of electric vehicles in the world, and the leading provider of heavy-duty electric vehicles in the United States.

"The Pennsylvania House of Representatives will soon take up HB 1446, a measure that will accelerate development of charging infrastructure for electric vehicles (EVs) in the state. The bill, sponsored by Rep. Marguerite Quinn (R-Bucks), passed the House Transportation Committee on March 9 with bipartisan support, on a 26-1 vote. As industry leaders in building the vehicles and infrastructure for electric passenger vehicles as well as medium- and heavy-duty transportation, we urge the House to pass the bill because it will establish Pennsylvania as the leader in this new era of mobility. We believe that HB 1446 will provide a landmark legislative model for the nation.

Electrifying transportation offers benefits to all members of our community - cleaner air, reduced dependence on fossil fuels, quieter and more efficient mass transit, reduced costs for all stakeholders and an overall improvement in the quality of life. EVs are already less expensive to own, operate, and maintain than gasoline-fueled vehicles. Over the next few years they will also become less expensive to buy and to own as battery and maintenance costs continue to decline…

…HB 1446 will accelerate the market for EVs as well as their charging infrastructure here in Pennsylvania. It will also accelerate the expansion of high-tech companies. This will make Pennsylvania a hub of clean tech innovation, driving business growth and economic prosperity…"
